27.08.2025

Burkina Faso has officially confirmed its participation in the Expo 2027, which will be held in Belgrade from 15 May to 15 August 2027, under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All.” The country joins the 119 nations already committed to taking part in this major global event.

Strengthened Diplomatic and Cultural Cooperation

Bilateral relations between Serbia and Burkina Faso date back to 1968, the year diplomatic ties were established between the two countries. This cooperation, marked by a shared commitment to fostering political, economic, and cultural exchanges, is notably reflected through the “World in Serbia” program, which enables many Burkinabe students to pursue higher education in Serbia.

Burkina Faso’s participation in Expo 2027 is part of this ongoing dynamic of mutual rapprochement and outreach.

“We are delighted to welcome Burkina Faso to Belgrade. This country will bring with it the unique spirit of West Africa and will offer an original interpretation of the Expo 2027 theme. In two years, Belgrade will become a true global workshop of innovation and creativity, and we are pleased that Burkina Faso will be part of this adventure,” said the CEO of Expo 2027 Belgrade, Danilo Jerinić.

A Rich and Diverse Cultural Showcase

The Burkina Faso pavilion will highlight the country’s cultural diversity and vibrant identity through artistic expressions such as:

  • Traditional dances, including the mask dance (among the Bwa, Nuna, Bobo), the warba dance and the rooster dance (among the Mossis), and the djongo dance (among the Gourounsis), which are symbols of strength, unity, and celebration.

  • A variety of traditional musical instruments: balafon, djembe, bendré, bara, kundé, kologo...

  • Popular traditional games, such as ludu, songo (awalé), wara, and zama, are living testaments to creativity and intergenerational transmission.

A Nation Passionate About Sport

In sports, Burkina Faso stands out for its traditional wrestling, deeply rooted in community festivities and embodying values of courage, loyalty, and cohesion. Martial arts, football, and boxing are also widely practiced, particularly in urban areas.

The country hosted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 1998 and made a strong impression by reaching the AFCON final in 2013. Among the iconic figures of Burkinabe football are Bertrand Traoré (international player and captain of the Stallions) and Dango Ouattara, a respected forward at AFC Bournemouth.

A Consistent International Commitment

A member of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) since 2008, Burkina Faso regularly participates in World and Specialised Expos. It is also taking part in Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai.

Its participation in Expo 2027 Belgrade will provide an exceptional platform to showcase its talents, traditions, innovations, and investment opportunities in a spirit of intercultural dialogue and international cooperation.

Expo 2027 will be the first International Exhibition organized in the Western Balkans. Over 93 days, more than four million visitors are expected, with the participation of over 120 countries, international organizations, and economic actors from around the world. The event will highlight the roles of sport and music in building a united, inclusive, and resilient humanity.
