Nepal, a mountainous country located on the southern slopes of the Himalayas in South Asia, has officially confirmed its participation in Expo 2027 Belgrade, the first International Exhibition in the Western Balkans, under the theme "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All."

Nepal and Serbia have shared traditionally close and friendly bilateral relations since 1959 and hold common views on many international issues. State officials have shared visits over the years, and EXPO 2027 Belgrade presents an excellent opportunity to strengthen the ties between the two countries further.

“We are thrilled that Nepal will bring the spirit of the Himalayas to the heart of Europe, and that the whole world will have the opportunity to experience its rich culture right here in Serbia. We are happy that two countries will deepen their relationship at Expo 2027, and we invite other Asian nations that have not yet confirmed their participation to do so soon, so that together we can showcase the world’s largest continent in the best possible light,” said Dušan Borovčanin, CEO of Expo 2027 d.o.o. Belgrade.

Nepal made its debut at the International Exhibitions at Expo 1970 in Osaka, where it will also participate in Expo 2025. A regular participant in both World and Specialised Expos, Nepal has been a member of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) since 2007.

Home to 125 different ethnic groups, Nepal is a country of rich cultural diversity. It is also a land of linguistic variety, with 123 languages spoken across the nation. The predominant religion is Hinduism, followed by Buddhism – a reflection of the country’s deep spiritual heritage, as it is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.

According to legend, Nepalese dance originated in the Himalayas, where the Hindu deity Shiva performed the Tandava dance. This underscores the ancient and distinctive character of the country's dance traditions. Popular traditional dances include the Dishka, performed at weddings; Lathi Nach, a stick dance of the Tharu people; and the Peacock Dance. The most popular sports are cricket, football, and volleyball – the latter of which has held the status of national sport since 2017.

Nepal is also known as the land of eight of the world’s ten highest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest, the tallest, on the border with China. Another distinctive feature of Nepal is its national flag, the only one in the world that is not rectangular. Its unique double-triangle shape, red color, and blue border make it instantly recognizable.

Expo 2027 Belgrade will take place from May 15 to August 15, 2027, with participation from over 120 countries. The event is expected to attract more than four million visits over its 93-day duration.
